Buying a visco memory foam mattress can be a significant investment. I’ve written quite a bit elsewhere on this site about visco foam mattresses and its history and what I would like to do here is to point out some of the main advantages and disadvantages of what’s been dubbed “the sleeping revolution”.

Visco foam or memory foam as its commonly known is a very special and unique type of foam. It is much firmer than standard foam and in terms of beds, it gives a lot more than standard spring mattresses. Although foam has been used in mattresses for a long time, the obvious problem was that its too soft to support a adult’s weight evenly. With denser foams, the problem is that it can’t retain its shape and the result is that the foam quickly starts wearing out which gives it a very limited lifespan as a bed.

The term memory foam comes from the fact that the foam always retains its original shape which is what makes it one of the most durable mattresses you can buy. Scientists discovered that by adding certain chemicals to the polyurethane it takes on a completely new character and the result is an ultra comfortable foam material that has a very high viscosity while being extremely dense.

While the durability and lifespan is a great advantage many argue that the actual sleeping experience is what makes a visco memory foam mattress. Memory foam conforms to the shape of your body and the nature of the material is to provide support where its needed. The more weight you put on it, the more support it provides. Unlike spring mattresses there are no point loadings anywhere on your body and the result is that you won’t wake up with muscle tension or spend your night rolling around.

One great aspect of a visco memory foam mattress is that your body weight does not get transferred to the rest of the mattress. If you are sleeping next to someone your movements will not affect them in any way and the days of your partner’s tossing and turning keeping you up at night will be a thing of the past.

While there are a lot of minor issues like the weight of the mattress and the initial smell of the polyurethane, the real issue is price. Although it is more expensive, it is also more durable and the lifetime of the mattress will by far out live any spring mattress so its definitely an investment.
