A Swedish mattress is like something out of a sci-fi move. A miracle foam that has the ability to conform to any shape only to return to its original shape once you take the pressure off it. When you first see it in action its really amazing and one of the most striking things is how good it feels. Its as if you melt into the foam yet its not so soft that it traps you. As a bed, it really is the perfect material. With virtually all beds being either too hard or too soft, this Swedish mattress really puts new meaning to a good nights rest.
Its a scientific fact that sleeping on a bad bed can cause you to wake up tired. Too much or too little support and an uneven distribution of your body weight can cause your muscles not to get sufficient rest and while most people don’t know it, they actually wake up constantly at night and never get into that deep sleep mode that makes us feel deeply rested. The right bed and the right mattress is the key to a great nights sleep and the so-called Swedish mattress may just be the answer for you.
In reality, the origin of this mattress is not in Sweden but in the USA and as I alluded earlier about it being sci-fi, it actually is. NASA developed a special foam in the early 1970 to help protect the astronauts during high speed lift-offs. They needed a material that can be soft enough, yet firm enough to protect them while helping them to still move. This is where the visco elastic foam was born and only when the Swedish company Tempur Pedic started making mattresses from it did it reach commercial acclaim.
The unique properties of this visco elastic foam was first recognised in the medical field for patients that spend a lot of time in bed. Traditional mattresses can get incredibly uncomfortable and lead to all sorts of issues for patients confined to a bed for 20 plus hours a day. With a Swedish mattress patients had virtually none of those issues and for this reason alone it speaks volumes for how comfortable it really is.
This unique type of foam is often referred to as “memory foam” because of the fact that it conforms to your body shape. While traditional spring mattresses only have a limited number of springs to support you, the weight gets distributed unevenly which means that your body is not properly supported at all times. With a Swedish mattress there is actually lots of small springs that ensures that your body is properly supported all over.
Another tremendous benefit of a memory foam mattress is the fact that 2 people can sleep next to each other and neither one’s movements will affect the other. Because the foam conforms to your body shape, movements are not reverberated through the entire mattress as is the case with spring mattresses.
Although a Swedish mattress is more expensive than a even a good spring mattress it really is a different league. Its a completely different product with completely different properties and if you really value your sleep and your health, then this is something you need to try.

Are you thinking of getting a visco foam mattress? While spring mattresses has become very advanced in recent years, the obvious limitations of the springs is what caused a lot of people endless sleeping problems. With springs wearing out and the fact that it cannot support your body weight evenly, the alternative of foam is something that most people never considered. Although foam mattresses has been around for a long time, its traditionally been seen as cheap an an inferior type of mattress.
Visco foam or memory foam is very different though. It has its origins in rigorous scientific research when NASA developed it for their space program. The challenge was to develop a type of foam that can be hard enough to support a lot of weight, yet soft enough to allow you so move comfortably on it. From this came what they called a visco elastic foam and it really is a very advanced material that can not even be compared to tradition foam products.
Visco foam mattresses first started with a Swedish company and its huge success soon spread to the rest of the world. The fact that the foam provides such an even distribution of your body weight means that anyone who has spinal issues is likely to sleep a lot better. Its been said that a lot of back problems are actually caused by bad mattresses and when you look at the mechanics of a traditional spring mattress then its no wonder why. the nature of springs is that takes “point loads” without evenly distributing the weight.
One of the first remarks that people have after sleeping on a visco foam mattress for the first time is the fact that it feels so cosy. The feeling for being enveloped by the mattress goes a long way of feeling comfortable on your bed. We all know that sleeping is a very important aspect of good health; of waking up refreshed and rested and feeling like you had a good nights sleep – every night!
When buying a visco foam mattress its important to make sure that you buy the real thing. Because of the popularity of the product many companies now claim to have “memory foam” on their mattresses but there is no replacement for real visco foam. It is more expensive and it probably won;t have the long life of many spring mattresses but in terms of the quality of sleep it has no rivals.

Buying a visco memory foam mattress can be a significant investment. I’ve written quite a bit elsewhere on this site about visco foam mattresses and its history and what I would like to do here is to point out some of the main advantages and disadvantages of what’s been dubbed “the sleeping revolution”.
Visco foam or memory foam as its commonly known is a very special and unique type of foam. It is much firmer than standard foam and in terms of beds, it gives a lot more than standard spring mattresses. Although foam has been used in mattresses for a long time, the obvious problem was that its too soft to support a adult’s weight evenly. With denser foams, the problem is that it can’t retain its shape and the result is that the foam quickly starts wearing out which gives it a very limited lifespan as a bed.
The term memory foam comes from the fact that the foam always retains its original shape which is what makes it one of the most durable mattresses you can buy. Scientists discovered that by adding certain chemicals to the polyurethane it takes on a completely new character and the result is an ultra comfortable foam material that has a very high viscosity while being extremely dense.
While the durability and lifespan is a great advantage many argue that the actual sleeping experience is what makes a visco memory foam mattress. Memory foam conforms to the shape of your body and the nature of the material is to provide support where its needed. The more weight you put on it, the more support it provides. Unlike spring mattresses there are no point loadings anywhere on your body and the result is that you won’t wake up with muscle tension or spend your night rolling around.
One great aspect of a visco memory foam mattress is that your body weight does not get transferred to the rest of the mattress. If you are sleeping next to someone your movements will not affect them in any way and the days of your partner’s tossing and turning keeping you up at night will be a thing of the past.
While there are a lot of minor issues like the weight of the mattress and the initial smell of the polyurethane, the real issue is price. Although it is more expensive, it is also more durable and the lifetime of the mattress will by far out live any spring mattress so its definitely an investment.
